SolarEdge unveils inverter-integrated EV charger

SolarEdge unveils inverter-integrated EV charger

SolarEdge, the Israeli developer of power electronics for the solar industry, has branched out into the world of electric vehicles (EVs) with the unveiling of its new Level 2 EV charger at the Intersolar North America exhibition.
The company claims that it is the world’s first inverter-integrated EV charger, and offers charging that is up to six times faster than industry standard chargers.
The Level 2 EV charger can be paired with SolarEdge’s HD-Wave inverter, which brings its existing solar PV production management and monitoring features to the EV space, thereby closing the circle of solar with EVs in a single step.
SolarEdge says that by offering this combined solution, home- and EV-owners can significantly lower their hardware and installation costs when adopting solar PV. The kit requires no additional conduit, wiring or breaker installation, and has not requirement for an additional dedicated circuit breaker.
The Level 2 EV charger can also deliver faster charging rates, SolarEdge says. Its patent-pending technology has a solar boost mode that can utilize both rooftop PV and grid energy to charge at 9.6 kW (40 Amp) charging. The charger can charge from the grid at 7.6 kW (32 Amp) if PV is not available.
Additional functionality includes the ability to perform demand-response and off-peak charging to take advantage of time-of-use (TOU) electricity rates prevalent in many places in the U.S.
“Adding EV charging to our growing range of products further enables system owners to easily manage their energy needs,” said SolarEdge chairman and CEO Guy Sella.
SolarEdge expects to have the EV charger market-ready in the last quarter of the year.
