London-based Highview Power Storage this week said it won about US$2 million in funding from the UK government’s innovation agency for the project.
“A hybrid LAES system provides the powerful combination of instant start and long duration storage and is an important step for Highview as it broadens the range of services which LAES can supply and will help enhance the economic case for its adoption,” Highview CEO Gareth Brett said in a statement.
Highview said that the hybrid LAES system will be added to its 5-MW/15-MWh pre-commercial demonstration plant at project partner, Viridor’s, Pilsworth landfill gas plant in Bury, Greater Manchester, UK. The project was awarded funding of more than US$11 million from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in 2014.
The hybrid LAES system will test performance and economics, and it will be operational by mid-2018.
