Montenegro announces 200 MW solar tender

Montenegro announces 200 MW solar tender

Montenegro’s Ministry of Economy announced that it will launch a tender for the construction of a 200 MW solar park in the municipality of Briska Gora, in the Ulcjni district, in the southernmost part of the country.
As a first step for the tender, the ministry is planning to call a public invitation to lease land owned by the state in the area.
“The public invitation defines the lease of the state-owned land with a total area of 6,621,121 m², for the design, construction, use and maintenance of a solar power plant with an installed capacity exceeding 200 MW,” the ministry stressed in its statement.
The selected project, the ministry said in its press release, is expected to sell power to the local grid through a long-term PPA. “This will avoid the possibility of taking over the risk from the state in terms of the impact on the increase in electricity prices for consumers in Montenegro,” the government added.
In January, the Ministry of Economy had been tasked to set up the tender by the country’s prime minister, Duško Marković.
The local press, meanwhile, has reported that the project may require a total investment of €300 million, and that two unidentified potential investors have already sent a letter of intent to the Montenegrin authorities.
Prior to this first tender for large-scale solar, Montenegro had only supported off-grid and rooftop PV, the latter of which through a specific FIT scheme that has produced very poor results to date.
