Half of the station’s units already have been converted, and the fourth is expected to be completed and back online by the end of the year, the company said.
“The conversion that’s underway is testament to the engineering expertise, skill and ingenuity we have at Drax,” Drax Power CEO Andy Koss said in a statement. “The team has developed some very innovative solutions for this upgrade, using all the knowledge we’ve gained throughout the work we have done so far to transform the business using sustainable biomass.”
Drax plans to convert the remaining two coal-fired generating units at the station to gas-fired units and add 200 MW of energy storage (MWh capacity not identified).
The utility in May submitted an application for the conversion of the two final units and addition of storage. If the application is accepted, a decision on the application is due next year, Drax said.
